Stepping into London for the first time was initially daunting due to its size, noise, and fast pace. Equipped solely with a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on where to start. If you’re about to embark on this journey, there’s no need to fret. Here’s how to get your new life in London off to a smooth start before your time at Imperial, enabling you to fully appreciate the city.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before the term kicks off, here’s the guidance I wish I had been given.

The first step: secure your living arrangements

Lock in your accommodation early to sidestep pricey hotel stays. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone, as the prime choices vanish swiftly. Look for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to spare yourself from lengthy commutes for morning classes.

Administrative tasks: handling the necessary basics

Once you arrive in London, tackle these essentials without delay:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, discover a trustworthy, budget-friendly method to move money from your home country. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – having data is vital for navigation. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after your arrival.
  • Setting up a bank account – some banks may require a local address, but online banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students. You’ll need this account for everyday transactions and part-time employment payments.
  • Student ID – crucial for gaining access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Make sure to collect it as soon as you can.

Your inaugural week at Imperial is paramount

The first week at Imperial is vital. It’s when you’ll meet your flatmates, classmates, and potential lifelong friends. Engage in Welcome Week to dive into over 350 student-led clubs and societies and immerse yourself in those that catch your interest.

Even if you’re on the shy side, challenge yourself to get involved. I did, and I found close friends throughout campus tours and society stalls. This week will set the foundation for your university experience.

Exploring London: travel wisely

During my first week, I traversed nine kilometers across London due to confusion with the Tube and buses. It was unforgettable, albeit chaotic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to enjoy cheap travel on the Tube and buses.

That said, walking remains the finest way to absorb the city’s culture and uncover hidden treasures along the way.

Discover your comfortable spots

London can be emotionally taxing, especially at first. Having a comfort zone helps – for me, it’s a nearby park where I unwind daily. The O2, just a ten-minute stroll away, is another, where I treat myself to a movie each week.

Identify your own comfort zones, whether it be a café, a bookstore, or a riverside bench, where you can take a break and reset.

And don’t overlook the need to explore!

Familiarize yourself with the frequently visited areas around your campus and residence. Locate the closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your favorite eateries or coffee spots.

Tour iconic landmarks, delve into free museums, hop on a red double-decker bus for the views, and wander aimlessly. Some of your most memorable moments will arise from those unplanned detours!

Final insights before diving into Imperial life

  • Grab a reusable bag – many stores impose fees for single-use bags.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas often fail against the wind.
  • Participate in quirky events – they turn into great anecdotes.
  • Don’t worry if you feel lost – it’s a common experience at the beginning.

You don’t need everything sorted out from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I stood when I started at Imperial. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
