Stepping into London for the first time was an incredible experience. The city appeared immense, bustling, and lively. With just a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I was uncertain where to start. If you’re preparing for a similar adventure, there’s no need to fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in settling into your new life in London prior to commencing your studies at Imperial, ensuring you can savor the experience of being new in the city.
Whether you’re arriving weeks ahead or just in time for term commencement, here’s the advice I wish I had been given upon my entry.
First and foremost: secure your accommodation
To steer clear of pricey hotel fees, make arrangements for accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the top choices go quickly. Strive for a place situated near your campus or a dependable Tube line to evade lengthy commutes for early morning classes.
Essential logistics: addressing the must-haves
Upon your arrival in London, there are several essentials to tackle:
- Money transfers – as an international student, you’ll require a cost-effective method to send money from home. Apps like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – having data is vital for navigation. Obtain a UK SIM card and a data plan soon after you arrive.
- Bank account – some banks need a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students. Set up an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – this is essential for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Acquire it at your earliest convenience.
The initial week at Imperial is key
Your initial week at Imperial is vital for your student experience. It’s the moment to connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in activities that pique your interest.
Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to join in. I did and made some of my closest friends during campus tours and society activities. Your first week shapes your university path.
Getting around London: travel smartly
During my first week, I was oblivious to the Tube or buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers through London. It was a memorable but chaotic experience. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel on the Tube and buses.
Walking remains an excellent way to explore the city and find hidden treasures.
Identify your comfort zones
London can feel emotionally intense, particularly initially. Having a favorite spot makes a difference – for me, it’s the park near my residence. I go daily to unwind. My second comfort zone is the O2, just a 10-minute stroll away, where I watch films weekly.
Seek out your own places, whether it’s a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench, to unwind and refresh.
And remember to explore!
Familiarize yourself with the area around your campus and home. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and preferred places for food or coffee.
Visit iconic landmarks, explore free museums, take a ride on a double-decker bus, and meander without a specific plan. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from wandering a bit off course!
Final pointers before you immerse yourself in Imperial student life
- Carry a reusable bag – stores usually charge for single-use ones.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas can be ineffective against wind.
- Be open to unusual events – they create memorable stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s common at the beginning.
You don’t have to have everything figured out on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I started at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and begin your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
