**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the brink of beginning my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into the depths of university life felt like an intimidating prospect. Now, as I reflect on my first academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and a multitude of unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where am I now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. For many incoming students, this is one of the primary worries when commencing university—and it certainly applied to me. On my very first day in student housing, just days before classes began, I spent an entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet new people.

Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most amazing friendships I’ve ever experienced. The individuals I’ve connected with here—both within my course and throughout the university—have become like a second family to me. All it required was stepping outside my comfort zone and initiating brief conversations with others who were experiencing similar feelings.

What did I take away from this? Taking that first step at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you’re feeling unsure or uncomfortable, don’t fret—there are ample icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, I discovered that being authentic is essential. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who share your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was adapting to the increased workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was evident, and the leap from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. Existing in such a demanding academic environment can sometimes undermine your confidence, especially when witnessing your peers studying and feeling like you’re lagging behind.

What aided me in overcoming this was the realization that everyone is facing similar struggles. If something is unclear, it’s likely there are others sharing the same experience. The crucial aspect is to reach out for assistance—whether from your classmates or the instructional staff. This is perhaps the most important lesson I gleaned during my first year: never hesitate to ask for help.

### Fostering Connections with Faculty

Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department have been remarkable. They genuinely care about students’ success and understand the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us and were always available to address our concerns.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had done so earlier. At the year’s outset, I took the initiative by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to cultivate connections with faculty members, which turned out to be extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly impact your university experience. My key takeaway? Fully utilize the support available to you—there’s no such thing as too much help!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I experienced—both before and during my time at university—was often unfounded. With the extensive range of support available from staff and fellow students, there’s always assistance on hand when needed. I’ve learned that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve found ways to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and fun.

University is a journey of growth, filled with both challenges and remarkable rewards. If you’re about to begin your own adventure, my advice is straightforward: take that leap, be true to yourself, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You’ll be astonished at how far you can progress.
