Stepping into London for the first time was a lot to take in. The city seemed enormous, noisy, and fast-moving. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on where to start. If you’re in a similar boat, there’s no need to stress. Here’s some guidance to assist you in getting settled in London prior to commencing your time at Imperial, helping you to make the most of your new city adventure.
Whether you’re arriving several weeks early or just shortly before the semester begins, here’s the advice I wish I had received upon my arrival.
Secure Accommodations
Prevent expensive hotel bills by organizing your housing well in advance. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The prime options are snapped up quickly, so look for a place close to your campus or an efficient Tube line to avoid lengthy commutes for morning classes.
Administrative Tasks: Key Essentials to Handle
When you get to London, tackle these vital tasks without delay:
- Money Transfers – As a student from abroad, discover a trustworthy and cost-effective method to transfer funds from your country. Services like Wise or Revolut provide better exchange rates.
- UK SIM Card – Purchase one as soon as possible to ensure you have mobile data for navigation in an unfamiliar city.
- Bank Account – While some banks may require a local address, digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and accommodating for students. Establish an account for everyday expenses and part-time job payments.
- Student ID Card – This is essential for accessing university buildings, libraries, and discounts for students. Acquire it promptly.
Your First Week at Imperial: Its Significance
The initial week at Imperial is vital for your student experience. It’s when you will meet your flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Get involved in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-run clubs and societies and engage in activities that catch your interest.
Even if you’re on the shy side, make an effort to participate. I did, and it was during campus tours and society booths that I met some of my closest companions. The first week lays the groundwork for your university experience.
Getting Around London: Travel Wisely
During my first week, I didn’t grasp the Tube or bus systems, leading me to walk nine kilometers through London. It was an unforgettable experience, albeit chaotic. Make sure you obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel the Tube and buses economically.
Walking remains an excellent way to engage with the city and stumble upon hidden treasures.
Identify Your Comfort Zones
London can be emotionally taxing, particularly at the beginning. Having your own comfort area is beneficial – mine happens to be a nearby park where I go to unwind. My secondary spot is the O2, just ten minutes away, where I regularly catch movies.
Discover your personal comfort zones, be it a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, where you can relax and recharge.
Discover the City
Become familiar with the key areas near your campus and residence. Find your local supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee locations.
Explore iconic sites, visit free museums, hop on a red double-decker bus, and wander around aimlessly. Some of your fondest memories will come from getting lost!
Final Suggestions Before Starting at Imperial
- Bring a reusable bag – stores often impose charges for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas don’t always hold up in the wind.
- Participate in unique events – they lead to great stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – that’s normal for everyone at first.
