Stepping into London for the first time was daunting due to its immense size and rapid tempo. Equipped solely with a suitcase and Google Maps, I was hesitant about where to start. If you’re about to undertake this journey, relax. Here’s how to get your life in London organized before commencing at Imperial, allowing you to savor the experience of being a newcomer in the city.

Whether you arrive several weeks in advance or right before the term commences, here’s the guidance I wish I had been offered.

First things first: secure your accommodations

Steer clear of pricey hotel accommodations by arranging your housing early. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone, as the top choices vanish quickly. Strive to reside near your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes to morning lectures.

Administrative tasks: arranging vital necessities

Once you land in London, take care of these essentials without delay:

  • Money transfers – International students require a trustworthy method to send money. Applications such as Wise or Revolut provide superior exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – Crucial for data access and navigation. Obtain one shortly after your arrival.
  • Bank account – Some banks may ask for a UK address, but online banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job earnings.
  • Student ID card – This provides entry to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as possible.

Your inaugural week at Imperial is vital

Your first week at Imperial is key to shaping your student journey. It’s when you’ll encounter flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to delve into over 350 student-run clubs and societies and register for activities that pique your interest.

Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to engage. I formed some of my dearest friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. Your initial week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Getting around London: travel wisely

In my first week, I trekked nine kilometers across London due to my confusion with the Tube and buses. It was unforgettable yet chaotic. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced travel expenses on the Tube and buses.

Walking remains a fantastic way to discover the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Identify your favorite spots

London can initially be overwhelming. Finding a comforting location helps – for me, it’s the park close to my residence. I go there daily to unwind. My second favorite is the O2, merely 10 minutes away, where I relax by catching a movie weekly.

Seek out your own comforting locations, whether that be a café, a bookstore, or a serene riverside bench. These areas provide a place to unwind and rejuvenate.

And remember to explore!

Familiarize yourself with your new environment around campus and home. Identify your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your favorite dining or coffee locations.

Tour iconic landmarks, discover free museums, take a ride on a classic red double-decker bus, and wander aimlessly. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from enjoying a bit of spontaneous exploration!

Final pointers before immersing yourself in Imperial student life

  • Get a reusable bag – Stores charge for single-use bags.
  • Purchase a waterproof jacket – Umbrellas often fail in windy conditions.
  • Be open to unique events – They can lead to fantastic stories.
  • If you feel disoriented, don’t panic – Everyone experiences this initially.

There’s no need to have everything sorted on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I stood when I began at Imperial. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure, one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
