Stepping into London for the first time felt like a lot to handle. The city appeared immense, bustling, and thriving. Armed with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain about my first steps. If you’re about to go through this, there’s no need to fret. Here are some tips to help you acclimate to London ahead of your time at Imperial, making the most of the city.
Whether you show up weeks early or just before classes begin, here’s the advice I wish I had been given.
Secure Accommodation in Advance
Prevent expensive hotel bills by finding accommodation early. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the prime options vanish quickly. Look for a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to shorten your travel time for morning lectures.
Crucial Life Administration
Right after arriving in London, tackle these fundamental tasks without delay:
- Money Transfers – International students must have a dependable, cost-effective method to send money from home. Platforms like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM Card – Make sure you can access data for navigation by obtaining a UK SIM card right away.
- Bank Account – Some banks ask for a UK address, but online banks like Monzo or Starling are quick to use and student-friendly. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
- Student ID Card – This card is vital for gaining access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.
The Significance of Your First Week at Imperial
Your inaugural week at Imperial is essential for shaping your student journey. It’s the ideal opportunity to meet flatmates, peers, and possible friends. Get involved in Welcome Week to check out more than 350 student-run clubs and societies and sign up for those that catch your interest.
Even if you’re a bit reserved, make an effort to engage. I connected with some of my closest friends during campus tours and society events. Your first week establishes the path for your university experience.
Smart Travel in London
At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. Prevent this mistake by acquiring a Student Oyster card and requesting the 18+ discount for cheaper travel costs.
Walking remains an excellent method to explore the city and uncover hidden treasures.
Establish Your Comfort Zones
London can feel intense. Having a go-to place is beneficial – mine is a local park that I visit daily for relaxation. Another favorite is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I enjoy movies weekly.
Identify your own spots such as a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench to unwind and recharge.
Discover the City
Familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Find your closest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and preferred eateries or coffee shops.
Check out iconic landmarks, explore free museums, hop on a red double-decker bus, and meander without an itinerary. Some of your fondest memories will arise from getting a little lost.
