Stepping into London for the first time was a breathtaking experience. The city appeared vast, noisy, and bustling. With just a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you are about to set out on a similar adventure, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in adjusting to your new life in London before you commence your journey at Imperial, so you can fully experience the city.

Whether you arrive a few weeks beforehand or right before the term kicks off, here’s the advice I wish I had when I got here.

Task One: Obtain Accommodation

Steer clear of the expensive hotel rates by organizing your accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone has that fortune, as the prime choices get taken quickly. Strive to locate a place near your campus or along a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for early morning lectures.

Necessary Administrative Tasks

When you arrive in London, it’s essential to take care of a few key items:

  • Money transfers – As an overseas student, you will need an economical method to transfer funds from your home country. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide more favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – Make sure you acquire a UK SIM card promptly to have data for navigation.
  • Bank account – Certain banks need a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students. Setting up a bank account is vital for everyday transactions and part-time job wages.
  • Student ID card – This card provides access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.

Significance of Your First Week at Imperial

Your first week at Imperial is pivotal for your student life. It’s the period to meet your flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-organized clubs and organizations and engage in activities that catch your interest.

Even if you feel shy, make an effort to get involved. I did, and it led to forging friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. Your initial week shapes the foundation of your university experience.

Navigate London Smartly

During my first week, unfamiliar with the Tube and buses, I trekked nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable yet chaotic. Avoid my error by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for affordable travel on the Tube and buses.

Nonetheless, walking is still the best way to immerse yourself in the city and its culture, uncovering hidden treasures along the way.

Identify Your Retreat Spots

London can feel emotionally intense at first. Finding a personal retreat helps; for me, it’s a nearby park where I go daily to unwind. My second refuge is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I enjoy a movie weekly.

Discover your own spots of comfort, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to rejuvenate in the vibrant city.

Discover the City!

Get to know the frequently visited areas near your campus and accommodation. Identify the closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee shops.

Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and enjoy a ride on a classic red double-decker bus. Some of your finest memories will stem from spontaneous adventures!

Final Points Before Diving into Imperial Life

  • Bring a reusable bag – Stores often charge for single-use bags.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – Umbrellas won’t hold up against wind-driven rain.
  • Welcome quirky events – They create great stories.
  • Don’t panic if you feel disoriented – It’s a normal feeling initially.

There’s no rush to have everything sorted out on day one. By reading this, you’re already ahead of where I stood when I began at Imperial. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and start your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
