My arrival in London was quite daunting at first. The city appeared massive, with everything happening at a rapid pace and loudness. With just a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re about to go through this, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to your new life in London before you begin at Imperial, allowing you to savor the experience of being new in the city.
Whether you arrive a few weeks early or just before the term starts, here’s the advice I wish I’d had when I arrived.
First things first: secure your accommodation
Book your lodging early to steer clear of pricey hotel stays. I was lucky, though not everyone is, as the top options vanish quickly. Try to find a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line – lengthy commutes are not ideal for early morning classes.
Life admin: organizing the essential items
As soon as you reach London, take care of these essentials without delay:
- Money transfers – as an international student, you’ll need a dependable way to send money. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide good rates.
- UK SIM card – having data is vital for navigating. Get a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after your arrival.
- Bank account – some banks require a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students. Set up an account for everyday expenses and part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – this provides access to campus buildings, libraries, and discounts for students. Obtain it as soon as you’re able.
The initial week at Imperial is crucial
Your inaugural week at Imperial is vital. It’s when you’ll meet roommates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to explore over 350 student-led clubs and societies, and sign up for activities that pique your interest.
Even if you tend to be shy, consider getting involved. I did, and formed bonds with some of my closest friends during campus tours and society events. Your first week will shape your university journey.
Getting around London: travel wisely
In my initial week, unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, I trekked nine kilometers across London. It was hectic but unforgettable – don’t repeat my error. Obtain your Student Oyster card and request the 18+ discount for affordable travel.
Walking remains the finest way to immerse yourself in the city and its culture. London’s hidden treasures are often unveiled through exploration.
Identify your favorite places
London can be emotionally intense at first. Having a go-to spot is beneficial – mine is a nearby park where I visit daily to unwind. The O2, just 10 minutes away, is another venue where I relax weekly with a film.
Discover your own comforting places, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or riverside bench. These locations provide a necessary break.

Get acquainted with the areas you’ll frequently visit near campus and your home. Find your closest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee spots.
Explore iconic landmarks and dedicate weekends to discovering the city. Enjoy free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the sights, and wander without an agenda. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from getting slightly lost!
Final pointers before you dive into Imperial student life
- Utilize a reusable bag – shops often charge for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t effective against stiff wind-driven rain.
- Participate in unique events – they often lead to the best stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s a common initial feeling.
You don’t need everything sorted out on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already in a better position than I was when I started at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
