Stepping into London for the first time was a lot to take in. The city appeared vast, noisy, and fast-moving. With just a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt a bit lost on where to start. If you find yourself in this situation, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in adjusting to London prior to your studies at Imperial, enabling you to relish the city.

No matter if you arrive weeks in advance or right before class starts, here’s the advice I wish I would have received upon my arrival.

First things first: secure your accommodation

Prevent expensive hotel bills by arranging your accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but this isn’t the case for everyone, as the prime options go fast. Target a residence close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to dodge lengthy commutes for early classes.

Administrative tasks: handling the necessary essentials

Upon your arrival, make these tasks a priority:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, seek a dependable, economical method to transfer funds. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – vital for navigation in unfamiliar areas. Acquire one with data shortly after you arrive.
  • Bank account – certain banks necessitate a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are fast and suited for students. Establish an account for transactions and payments from part-time jobs.
  • Student ID card – essential for campus entry, library access, and obtaining student discounts. Secure it without delay.

Your initial week at Imperial is key

Your first week at Imperial is paramount. It’s when you’ll get to know your flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Engage in Welcome Week to check out more than 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re reserved, push yourself to take part. I formed strong bonds during campus tours and society activities. This week establishes the atmosphere for your university journey.

Understanding London: travel wisely

During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable yet hectic. Acquire a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably. Walking remains an excellent way to navigate the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Identify your comfort spots

London can be emotionally intensive. Having a favorite spot can be beneficial. Mine is a park nearby where I go to unwind. Another is the O2, only 10 minutes away, where I regularly catch movies. Discover your own places, such as a café or bookstore, where you can relax and refresh.

And don’t forget to wander!

Familiarize yourself with the areas surrounding your campus and home. Identify the nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and cherished eateries. Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the experience. Some of your fondest memories will arise from wandering a bit off the beaten path.

Final pointers before immersing yourself in Imperial student life

  • Carry a reusable bag – stores frequently charge for single-use ones.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas are ineffective in windy conditions.
  • Participate in unique events – they can lead to great stories.
  • Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s common at the start.

You don’t have to have all the answers on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
