Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city appeared vast, noisy, and bustling. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, there’s no need to fret. Here’s how to get your London life sorted before beginning at Imperial, so you can relish the novelty of being in the city.

Whether you touch down a few weeks early or just prior to the term kicking off, here’s the guidance I wish had been shared with me.

Secure your accommodation

Book your living arrangements in advance to sidestep pricey hotel bills. I was lucky, but not all are. The top choices vanish quickly, so strive for a location close to your campus or on a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy travel times for early lectures.

Essential life administration tasks

Once you arrive in London, tackle these vital tasks without delay:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, seek out a trustworthy and cost-effective way to send money from your home country. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – obtain one right away for data and navigation in unfamiliar neighborhoods.
  • Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are fast and accommodating for students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
  • Student ID card – crucial for entering campus buildings, libraries, and accessing student discounts. Acquire it as quickly as possible.

The significance of your first week at Imperial

Your initial week at Imperial is pivotal. It’s when you’ll meet flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies. Even if you are a bit reserved, make an effort to engage. I formed close friendships during spontaneous campus tours and society booths. This week lays the groundwork for your academic experience.

Smart travel in London

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses and ended up trekking nine kilometers across London. Avoid my blunder by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for reduced travel costs. Walking is a fantastic way to navigate the city and uncover its hidden treasures.

Identify your comfort zones

London can feel emotionally intense. Having a comforting spot is beneficial – mine is a nearby park. I visit it daily to decompress. My second favorite is the O2, where I catch movies weekly. Seek out your own go-to places, like a café or bookstore, to relax.

Discover the city

Familiarize yourself with your new environment around campus and your residence. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries. Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and ride on a red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from unplanned explorations.

Final advice for starting at Imperial

  • Carry a reusable bag – stores charge for single-use bags.
  • Invest in a waterproof coat – umbrellas can be ineffective in blustery rain.
  • Participate in unique events – they often lead to great stories.
  • Don’t stress about feeling disoriented – it’s completely normal at the beginning.

You don’t need to have everything sorted from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I first arrived at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
