When I first arrived in London, it felt incredibly overwhelming. The city struck me as immense, noisy, and fast-moving. With just a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain where to start. If you find yourself in a similar situation, there’s no need to fret. Here’s my guidance to assist you in acclimating to life in London before commencing at Imperial, ensuring you can relish your new city experience.

Regardless of whether you come weeks ahead or just prior to term, here’s the guidance I wish I had received upon my arrival.

Secure Accommodation Early

Steer clear of costly hotel stays by arranging accommodation in advance. I was lucky, though not everyone shares that fortune. The prime options vanish swiftly, so strive to locate a place near your campus or a handy Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for early lectures.

Vital Life Admin Tasks

Upon your arrival in London, make these tasks a priority:

  • Money transfers: As an international student, identify a dependable and cost-effective method to transfer funds from your home country. Apps like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card: Obtain one right away to utilize data for navigation in this unfamiliar area.
  • Bank account: Some banks necessitate a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly. Establish an account for everyday transactions and payments for part-time jobs.
  • Student ID card: This is essential for gaining access to campus buildings, libraries, and student discounts. Acquire it at your earliest convenience.

Maximize Your First Week at Imperial

Your initial week is vital for your student journey. Meet your flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in activities that pique your interest.

Even if you feel shy, make an effort to get involved. I forged some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society functions. Your first week lays the foundation for your university experience.

Navigate London Wisely

During my first week, I logged nine kilometers walking through London due to confusion with the Tube and buses. It was an unforgettable experience but quite chaotic. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably on public transportation.

Walking remains an excellent way to discover the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

London can be emotionally intense at first. Having a spot of comfort is beneficial. For me, it’s a nearby park where I visit daily to unwind. My second favorite is the O2, just a ten-minute stroll away, where I enjoy a movie each week.

Seek out your own comforting locations, whether it’s a cafe, a bookstore, or a bench by the riverside, to relax and rejuvenate.

Discover the City

Get acquainted with the areas surrounding your campus and residence. Identify the closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your preferred food or coffee venues.

Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from spontaneous discoveries.

Final Suggestions for Starting at Imperial

  • Utilize a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use ones.
  • Consider getting a waterproof jacket; umbrellas can be ineffective in gusty conditions.
  • Attend unique events for unforgettable experiences.
  • Don’t fret if you feel a bit lost at first; it’s completely normal.

There’s no need to have everything sorted from the very first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
