Upon arriving in London for the very first time, the city appeared vast, lively, and a bit daunting. Armed only with a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you find yourself in a similar predicament soon, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to your new life in London before commencing at Imperial, so you can fully enjoy the experience of being new in the city.

Whether you’re arriving a few weeks ahead or just right before the term starts, here’s the advice I wish I had received on my arrival.

Priority One: Find Accommodations

Steer clear of expensive hotel fees by securing your accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but many are not, as the best choices vanish quickly! Strive to locate a place near your campus or close to a dependable Tube line – early morning classes can be tough if you live over an hour away.

Crucial Life Admin

Upon your arrival in London, a few essentials need your swift attention:

  • Finances management – as an international student, find a trustworthy and cost-effective way to transfer funds from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut can help bypass unfavorable exchange rates.
  • Obtaining a UK SIM card – lacking data means no navigation, which can be hard in an unfamiliar area. Acquire a UK SIM card and data shortly after you arrive.
  • Establishing a bank account – some banks may ask for a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly. Set up an account for transactions and to receive payments for part-time employment.
  • Receiving your student ID card – this is essential for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Secure your student ID as soon as you can.

The Essential First Week at Imperial

Your inaugural week at Imperial is crucial for your student experience. This is when you’ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and register for activities that catch your interest.

Even if you’re introverted, make an effort to engage. I did, and I met some of my closest friends during impromptu campus tours and society stalls. Your first week at Imperial will set the stage for your university experience.

Smart Transportation in London

<pDuring my initial week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, prompting me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic but unforgettable – avoid mimicking my mistake. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel on the Tube and buses more economically.

Nonetheless, walking remains the best way to immerse yourself in the city and its culture. London has countless hidden treasures waiting to be discovered by strolling.

Identifying Your Comfort Spaces

London can be emotionally overwhelming, especially at first. Having a comfort spot is beneficial – mine is the park near my residence, where I head daily to unwind. My secondary location is the O2, only 10 minutes away, where I enjoy watching movies weekly to relax.

Discover your own comfort spaces, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or riverside bench. These places for rest and rejuvenation are more valuable than you might realize.

Explore and Discover!

Familiarize yourself with the areas you frequent around campus and your home. Locate your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite spots for meals or coffee.

Visit iconic landmarks and spend weekends exploring your new city. Check out free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the view, and roam without an agenda. Some of your best memories will come from getting a little lost!

Final Suggestions Before Diving into Imperial Life

  • Carry a reusable bag – shops frequently charge for disposable ones.
  • Invest in a waterproof coat – umbrellas struggle against rain driven by wind.
  • Participate in unique events – they create the best stories.
  • Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented – everyone does initially.

You don’t have to have everything figured out on day one. If you
