Stepping into London for the first time was quite overwhelming. The city felt immense, noisy, and bustling. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you are about to face this, don’t fret. Here are my tips for acclimating to London before commencing your studies at Imperial, allowing you to relish the city.

Regardless of whether you arrive early or just ahead of term, here’s what I wish I had known upon my arrival.

Secure Your Accommodation

Prevent costly hotel expenses by organizing your living arrangements in advance. I got lucky, but not everyone does. The top choices fill up fast, so try to find a place close to campus or a dependable Tube line to avoid lengthy commutes for morning classes.

Important Life Administration

Upon your arrival, make these tasks your priority:

  • Money transfers: As an overseas student, find an economical method to transfer funds from your home country. Apps such as Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card: Acquire one immediately to have data and navigation in a new environment.
  • Bank account: Some traditional banks may ask for a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling offer quick, student-friendly accounts. Establish an account for your everyday transactions and part-time earnings.
  • Student ID card: This is vital for gaining access to campus buildings, libraries, and student discounts. Retrieve it as soon as you can.

Maximize Your First Week at Imperial

Your first week is vital to your student experience. You’ll encounter flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Get involved with Welcome Week to explore more than 350 student-run clubs and societies. Even if you’re reserved, make an effort to join in. I forged strong friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. This initial week lays the groundwork for your university experience.

Navigate London Wisely

At first, I struggled to comprehend the Tube and bus system and ended up walking nine kilometers throughout London. It was unforgettable but chaotic. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. However, walking remains a fantastic way to explore and unearth hidden treasures.

Discover Your Safe Havens

London can feel emotionally intense. Identify a comforting location, such as a nearby park, to unwind and recharge. My secondary favorite spot is the O2, where I relax with a film. Find your own comfort zones, whether it’s a cafe, bookstore, or a riverside bench, to establish tranquility in the city.

Discover the City

Get acquainted with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and home. Locate your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries. Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and enjoy a ride on a classic red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will spring from spontaneous escapades.

Final Suggestions for Beginning at Imperial

  • Utilize a reusable bag to evade fees for single-use bags.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas aren’t effective during windy conditions.
  • Participate in unique events for unforgettable memories.
  • Don’t stress if you feel disoriented; it’s perfectly normal at first.

You don’t have to have everything resolved on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I started. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
