Arriving in London for the first time was a whirlwind of emotions. The city appeared enormous, noisy, and bustling. With just a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on how to start. If you’re about to go through this, there’s no need to fret. Here’s how to acclimate to London before your time at Imperial, enabling you to relish your new urban life.
Regardless of whether you get here weeks early or right before classes commence, here’s the guidance I wish someone had shared with me.
Secure Your Living Arrangements
Steer clear of pricey hotel accommodations by arranging your housing in advance. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The prime choices vanish quickly! Strive to inhabit a space close to your campus or a dependable Tube route to lessen long journeys for morning lectures.
Crucial Administrative Tasks
Once you settle in London, address these key points without delay:
- Currency transfers – as an international student, discover a trustworthy method to send money from your home country. Apps like Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.
- UK SIM card – vital for navigation. Acquire one with data soon after your arrival.
- Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and accommodating for students. Establish an account for your everyday expenses and part-time job payments.
- Student ID – indispensable for entry to campus, library utilization, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as possible.
Your Initial Week at Imperial
Your inaugural week is pivotal. This is when you’ll interact with flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student clubs and societies. Even if you are reserved, encourage yourself to join in. I formed close friendships during campus tours and society displays. This week shapes the framework of your university experience.
Navigate London Efficiently
In my first week, I wandered nine kilometers through London due to my uncertainty regarding the Tube and buses. It was unforgettable but a bit chaotic. Acquire a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced fare travel. Walking remains a wonderful way to uncover and enjoy hidden treasures.
Discover Your Favorite Spots
London can sometimes feel emotionally draining. Having a go-to place can be comforting. Mine is a local park where I unwind. The O2, only 10 minutes away, is another great spot for catching a movie. Seek out your own havens, like a cafe or a bookstore, where you can chill and refresh.
Get to Know the City
Acquaint yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Identify local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and beloved eateries. Visit iconic landmarks, free museums, and take a ride on a double-decker bus. Some of your fondest memories will arise from spontaneous explorations.
Concluding Suggestions for Life at Imperial
- Carry a reusable bag to dodge fees for single-use options.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas are less effective in strong winds.
- Join in on unique events for unforgettable experiences.
- If you feel disoriented, don’t panic; it’s a common feeling in the beginning.
You don’t have to have everything planned out from the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I started. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
