Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to handle. The city appeared immense, noisy, and bustling. With only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar situation, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in adjusting to London before your journey at Imperial, enabling you to enjoy the experience of your new city.
Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just in time for the term, here’s the advice I wish I had been given upon my arrival.
Secure Accommodation
Steer clear of pricey hotel accommodations by arranging your place to stay in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone finds it easy. The prime spots get snapped up quickly, so try to locate something close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize long commutes for early classes.
Addressing Life Admin: Key Essentials
Once you’re in London, tackle these essentials without delay:
- Money Transfers – International students require a dependable means to transfer funds. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM Card – Make sure to acquire a UK SIM card and data plan soon after arriving to have data for navigation.
- Bank Account – Digital banks like Monzo or Starling are swift and accommodating for students. Open an account for everyday transactions and payments from part-time jobs.
- Student ID Card – This card is vital for entering campus facilities, libraries, and accessing student discounts. Collect it at your earliest convenience.
The Significance of Your Initial Week at Imperial
Your first week at Imperial is essential for your student journey. It’s the opportunity to meet flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies while engaging in activities that catch your interest.
Even if you consider yourself shy, try to get involved. I did, and I met some of my best friends during campus tours and society events. Your first week will set the stage for your university experience.
Navigate London Wisely
During my initial week, I struggled with the Tube and buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer walk across London. It was unforgettable yet chaotic. Prevent this by obtaining your Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount to travel affordably on the Tube and buses.
Walking remains an excellent way to explore the city and uncover hidden treasures.
Identify Your Comfort Zones
London can feel emotionally intense, particularly at the beginning. Having a favorite spot can be comforting. For me, that’s the park near my residence and the local O2 for movies. Discover your own cozy locations, whether it’s a cafe, a bookstore, or a riverside bench, where you can unwind and regroup.
Discover the City
Familiarize yourself with the areas you frequently visit around campus and home. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your preferred food or coffee venues.
Visit iconic landmarks, explore free museums, and enjoy spontaneous city strolls. Some of your fondest memories will arise from wandering a bit off the beaten path.
Final Pieces of Advice for Starting at Imperial
- Utilize a reusable bag to avoid charges for single-use ones.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket since umbrellas often fail against strong winds.
- Attend unique events for unforgettable moments.
- Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented at first; it’s entirely normal.
There’s no requirement to have everything figured out on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already doing better than I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
