By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing

Stepping into London for the first time was quite an experience. The city felt immense, bustling, and energetic. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I wasn’t certain how to start. If you’re preparing for a similar situation, there’s no need to worry. Here’s some guidance to help you adjust before your journey at Imperial begins, allowing you to fully embrace your new city life.

Regardless of whether you arrive weeks in advance or right before the semester starts, here’s what I could have benefitted from knowing upon my arrival.

Secure Accommodation

Steer clear of expensive hotel costs by organizing your lodging early. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The most desirable accommodations are quickly taken, so strive for a location close to your campus or on a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for morning classes.

Necessary Administrative Tasks

Take care of these crucial tasks soon after reaching London:

  • Money Transfers – As an international student, identify a trustworthy method for transferring funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM Card – Obtain one promptly to ensure you have mobile data for navigation in your new environment.
  • Bank Account – Some banks require a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick to set up and friendly to students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time earnings.
  • Student ID Card – This is essential for gaining access to campus facilities, libraries, and obtaining student discounts. Collect it as early as you can.

Significance of Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week at Imperial is vital. It’s the time when you will meet flatmates, fellow students, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re a bit reserved, attempt to join in. I found close friends during spontaneous campus tours and society booths. This week establishes the foundation for your university journey.

Smart Travel in London

In my first week, I struggled to comprehend the Tube or buses, which led to me walking nine kilometers across London. It was a remarkable but hectic experience. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for affordable travel on the Tube and buses. Walking remains a fantastic way to uncover hidden treasures in the city.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

London can feel emotionally intense initially. Having a comforting space is beneficial. Mine is a park near my residence where I go to unwind and reset. The O2, located just 10 minutes away, is another preferred destination for relaxing with a movie. Discover your own locations, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or riverside seat, to unwind and rejuvenate.

Discover the City

Become familiar with your new area around campus and your home. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and cherished food or coffee spots. Visit iconic landmarks, take advantage of free museums, and savor the scenery from a red double-decker bus. Some of your fondest memories will emerge from moments of getting a bit lost!

Final Recommendations Before Attending Imperial

  • Carry a reusable bag – stores typically charge for disposable ones.
  • Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas don’t hold up well against the wind.
  • Participate in unique events – they make for fantastic stories.
  • Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – it’s completely normal at the beginning.

You don’t need to have everything resolved by day one. If you are reading this, you are already in a better position than I was when I began at Imperial. Inhale deeply, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
