Stepping into London was initially quite daunting for me. The city appeared immense, noisy, and fast-moving. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I felt disoriented. If you’re about to embark on this journey, don’t fret. Here’s how to kick-start your new life in London before commencing at Imperial, allowing you to relish the city.
Whether you arrive weeks ahead or just prior to term, here’s the guidance I wish had been shared with me.
Secure Housing
Book your accommodation early to steer clear of expensive hotel expenses. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The prime choices vanish quickly, so strive for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes.
Crucial Life Administration
Upon your arrival, tackle these necessities:
- Money transfers – as an overseas student, discover a reliable method for transferring funds. Apps like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – vital for data and navigation. Obtain one as soon as possible.
- Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are swift and accommodating for students. Establish an account for transactions and part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – this permits access to campus facilities, the library, and student discounts. Collect it without delay.
Significance of Your First Week at Imperial
Your initial week is vital for connecting with flatmates, peers, and prospective friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover clubs and societies. Even if you feel reserved, make an effort to get involved. I formed close friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.
Be Smart About Travel in London
At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, which led to a nine-kilometer trek. Prevent this by acquiring a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Walking is still fantastic for uncovering hidden treasures.
Identify Your Favorite Spots
London can feel overwhelming. Having a comforting location is beneficial. Mine is a local park and the O2, where I relax weekly. Discover your own favorite places, like a café or bookstore, to unwind and recharge.
Discover the City
Get to know the areas surrounding campus and your residence. Identify local grocery stores, pharmacies, parks, and beloved eateries. Explore landmarks, museums, and enjoy impromptu city strolls. Some of your fondest memories will arise from a little adventure!
Final Advice for Starting at Imperial
- Utilize a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas are ineffectual in windy weather.
- Participate in unique events – they lead to great experiences.
- Feel free to feel lost – it’s completely normal at the start.
You don’t have to have everything sorted on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
