Stepping into London for the first time was a lot to take in. The city seemed vast, noisy, and bustling. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If this is your situation, there’s no need to stress. Here’s how to acclimate to London before commencing your journey at Imperial, enabling you to relish your new urban life.
Regardless of whether you arrive weeks in advance or just ahead of term, here’s the guidance I wish someone had shared with me.
First things first: secure accommodation
Steer clear of pricey hotels by booking lodging as soon as possible. I was lucky, but not everyone gets that fortune, as the best spots can be snapped up in no time. Aim to find a location that’s close to campus or near a dependable Tube line to avoid lengthy commutes for early classes.
Administrative tasks: organizing essential needs
Once you’re in London, deal with these necessities without delay:
- Money transfers – as an international student, look for a budget-friendly method to transfer funds from your home country. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.
- UK SIM card – obtain one right away for data and navigation in your new surroundings.
- Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick to set up and friendly for students. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time job earnings.
- Student ID card – vital for accessing campus, utilizing the library, and availing student discounts. Get it as soon as you can.
The initial week at Imperial is key
Your first week at Imperial holds significant importance. It’s when you connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and join those that pique your interest.
Even if you’re somewhat reserved, make an effort to get involved. I forged lasting friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. This week lays the groundwork for your university journey.
Getting around London: travel wisely
At first, I struggled to grasp the Tube or buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable, albeit chaotic, experience. Purchase a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel on the Tube and buses.
Walking remains an excellent way to discover the city’s hidden treasures.
Identify your favorite places
London can sometimes feel emotionally taxing. Having a comfort place is beneficial – mine is a nearby park where I relax daily. Another favorite spot is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I enjoy watching films each week.
Find your own special spots, whether it’s a cafe, bookstore, or a peaceful bench by the river, to recharge and refresh.
And remember to explore!
Become familiar with the areas surrounding campus and your accommodation. Identify the nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your go-to food or coffee spots.
Check out iconic landmarks, free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the view. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from spontaneous adventures.
Final reminders before you jump into Imperial student life
- Get a reusable bag – stores charge for single-use ones.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas might not stand up in windy conditions.
- Embrace unconventional events – they can lead to great memories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s perfectly natural at first.
You’re not expected to have everything sorted out on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.
