Stepping foot in London for the first time was quite a lot to handle. The city seemed vast, noisy, and full of energy. Armed with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re about to embark on this journey, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to your new life in London before beginning at Imperial, allowing you to savor the city.

Whether you’re landing weeks in advance or just before classes begin, here’s the wisdom I wish I had received upon my arrival.

First and foremost: secure your accommodation

Book your lodging early to steer clear of pricey hotel fees. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune, as the top choices get taken quickly. Strive for a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes to early morning lectures.

Life management: sorting out the necessary basics

Once you arrive in London, handle these essentials without delay:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, find a trustworthy, cost-effective method for transferring funds. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – acquire one swiftly for data access and navigation in a new town.
  • Bank account – some banks require a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students. You’ll need an account for everyday spending and part-time job deposits.
  • Student ID card – vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Make sure to collect it as soon as possible.

The initial week at Imperial is pivotal

Your first week at Imperial significantly impacts your student experience. It’s when you’ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and future buddies. Engage with Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-initiated clubs and organizations and join those that pique your interest.

Even if you’re reserved, challenge yourself to get involved. I did, and I made lasting friendships during campus tours and at society booths. Your initial week lays the groundwork for your university adventure.

Getting around London: travel wisely

During my first week, I struggled with the Tube and buses and found myself walking nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic yet unforgettable. Prevent this by obtaining your Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable Tube and bus fares.

Walking remains an excellent way to uncover the city and find hidden treasures.

Discover your cozy spots

London can be emotionally intense, especially at first. Having a comforting place can be beneficial – mine is a local park where I unwind daily. My second favorite spot is the O2, just a 10-minute journey away, where I catch movies weekly.

Identify your own cozy locations, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to decompress and refresh.

And don’t overlook the importance of exploration!

Familiarize yourself with the frequented areas around your campus and residence. Find your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee spots.

Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the views, and meander without a specific destination. Some of your fondest experiences will stem from wandering a bit off-course!

Final pointers before you dive into Imperial student life

  • Carry a reusable bag – stores commonly charge for single-use bags.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas often fail in windy weather.
  • Participate in unique events – they make for excellent tales.
  • Don’t panic if you feel disoriented – it’s a common feeling at first.

You don’t have to have everything sorted on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London story one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
