Stepping into London for the first time, I saw it as vast, noisy, quick-paced, and somewhat intimidating. With only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt adrift. If you’re in a similar boat, there’s no need to fret. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimatize to your new existence in London before you commence at Imperial, enabling you to revel in the novelty of the city.

Whether you arrive weeks prior or just as the term kicks off, here’s what I wish I knew upon my first arrival.

First things first: secure your accommodation

Avoid racking up bills in hotels by arranging your housing ahead of time. I was lucky, but that isn’t the case for everyone. The best spots are snapped up quickly! Aim for accommodation close to your campus or a dependable Tube line, since lengthy commutes are less than ideal for early lectures.

Life management: tackling the must-haves

Once you’ve landed in London, handle these necessities as soon as possible:

  • Transferring money – as an international student, look for a dependable, cost-effective method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut can help you skip unfavorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – without internet access, figuring out a new locale is challenging. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan soon after arrival.
  • Setting up a bank account – some banks ask for a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and cater to students. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
  • Acquiring a student ID card – this is essential for entering campus buildings, libraries, and securing student discounts. Make sure to collect it at the earliest.

Your initial week at Imperial is critical

Your first week at Imperial is vital. It’s when you will meet flatmates, peers, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies and get involved in activities that pique your interest.

Even if you’re reserved, make an effort to engage. I did, and I formed close friendships during spontaneous campus tours and society booths. This week lays the groundwork for your university experience.

Getting around London: travel wisely

<pDuring my initial week, I was clueless about the Tube or buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometers throughout London. It was chaotic yet unforgettable. Avoid my blunder by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for cheaper travel on the Tube and buses.

Nonetheless, walking is a splendid way to appreciate the city and its culture. You will stumble upon hidden treasures just by wandering around.

Discover your favorite spots

London can feel overwhelming, particularly at first. Having a comforting place helps – mine is a local park where I go daily to unwind. My second favorite is the O2, only 10 minutes away, where I watch movies weekly to relax.

Identify your own spots, be it a cafe, bookstore, or a bench by the river, to recharge and reset. It’s more useful than you may believe.

And remember to explore!

Familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods you frequent around campus and your residence. Identify the nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your go-to dining or coffee locations.

Visit iconic landmarks, explore complimentary museums, take a ride on a double-decker bus for the view, and meander aimlessly. Some of your fondest memories will emerge from moments of slight confusion!

Final pieces of advice before diving into Imperial student life

  • Get a reusable bag – stores frequently charge for disposable ones.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas are ineffective in blustery conditions.
  • Embrace unusual events – they create the best anecdotes.
  • Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented – everyone experiences that initially.

You don’t need to have everything sorted out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already in a better position than I was upon starting at Imperial. So take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
