Upon my initial arrival in London, I perceived it as vast, loud, fast-moving, and somewhat daunting. Equipped with merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I sensed a lack of direction. If you’re about to face this, don’t fret. Here are ways to settle into London before beginning at Imperial, so you can relish your new urban life.

Whether you come weeks ahead or just before classes start, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

First priority: secure accommodation

Steer clear of expensive hotels by organizing your lodging in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the top choices vanish swiftly. Look for a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize long daily travels for morning lectures.

Administrative tasks: taking care of the essentials

Once in London, promptly attend to these necessities:

  • Money transfer – being an international student, discover a trustworthy, cost-effective method to transfer funds from your home country. Apps such as Wise or Revolut can help you avoid unfavorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – navigating a new locale is tricky without data. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan soon after your arrival.
  • Bank account – some banks ask for a UK address, yet digital banks like Monzo or Starling are fast and accommodating for students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job earnings.
  • Student ID card – vital for campus access, library usage, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as possible.

Your initial week at Imperial is pivotal

Your first week at Imperial holds significant importance. It’s the time to meet your flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-facilitated clubs and societies and engage in activities that pique your interest.

Even if you’re reserved, challenge yourself to join in. I did, and it led me to form close friendships during campus tours and society stalls. Your first week lays the groundwork for your university experience.

Traveling around London: be savvy

<pDuring my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, which resulted in me walking nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic yet unforgettable. Avoid making the same mistake. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced Tube and bus fares.

Walking remains the optimal way to immerse yourself in the city’s atmosphere and culture. You’ll uncover hidden treasures by meandering around.

Identify your comforting spaces

Initially, London can be emotionally overwhelming. Having a comforting spot is beneficial – mine is a nearby park where I go daily to unwind. My secondary place is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I relax weekly by watching a movie.

Discover your own comforting locations, such as a café, bookstore, or a bench by the river. These environments assist more than you might realize in helping you decompress and refresh.

And remember to discover!

Become familiar with the areas you’ll frequent around campus and home. Locate your local supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining or coffee venues.

Explore iconic landmarks. Dedicate your weekends to discovering your new city. Visit free museums. Ride a red double-decker bus to enjoy the sights. Roam without a set plan. Many of your best experiences will arise from those unexpected detours!

Final pieces of advice before starting your journey as an Imperial student

  • Grab a reusable bag – stores frequently charge for single-use bags.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas can’t always withstand the wind.
  • Embrace unusual events – they create memorable anecdotes.
  • Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – that’s normal for everyone at first.

There’s no need to have everything sorted from day one. If you’re perusing this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I commenced at Imperial. Take a moment to breathe, get your Oyster card, and begin your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
