Stepping into London for the first time, the city appeared vast, vibrant, and bustling. Armed only with a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on where to start. If you find yourself in the same position soon, there’s no need to fret. Here are some tips to help you acclimate to London before your journey at Imperial begins, ensuring you can truly appreciate the city.

No matter if you arrive weeks in advance or right before term starts, here’s the guidance I wish I’d received.

Secure accommodation

Steer clear of pricey hotel accommodations by arranging housing ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that experience. Seek out a location in proximity to your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for morning classes.

Administrative essentials

Address these essential tasks shortly after your arrival in London:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, discover a trustworthy method for transferring funds. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – procure one promptly to avoid being without data and directions in an unfamiliar city.
  • Bank account – digital banking options such as Monzo or Starling offer speedy setups and cater to students. Establish an account for managing transactions and receiving part-time work earnings.
  • Student ID card – crucial for accessing campus facilities, utilizing the library, and obtaining student discounts. Be sure to collect it without delay.

The initial week at Imperial is essential

Your first week at Imperial is critical for your academic experience. Connect with flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-run clubs and societies. Even if you’re hesitant, make an effort to join in; I forged strong friendships during campus tours and society fairs. This week significantly influences your university adventure.

Smart travel in London

<pDuring my first week, I inadvertently walked nine kilometres throughout London due to confusion with the Tube and buses. Prevent this by acquiring a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount to enjoy more affordable travel. Despite this, walking is a fantastic way to uncover the city's hidden treasures.

Identify your comfort zones

London can feel overwhelming at first. Having a comforting spot is beneficial; mine is a nearby park that I visit daily for relaxation. My second favorite is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I catch movies weekly. Discover your own locations, such as a café or a bookstore, to unwind.

Get out there!

Acquaint yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding campus and your home. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and preferred eateries. Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus for a picturesque view. Some of your fondest memories will come from aimless exploration.

Last-minute tips before diving into Imperial life

  • Grab a reusable bag – stores charge for single-use bags.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas can be ineffective in windy conditions.
  • Join unique events – they lead to memorable stories.
  • Don’t stress if you’re feeling disoriented – it’s entirely normal at the outset.

You don’t have to have everything sorted on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already in a better position than I was. Take a deep breath, seize your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus journey and Tesco visit at a time.
