Deciding to apply to Imperial is likely a choice you’ve been mulling over for some time, and it can feel quite daunting knowing it’s a one-time opportunity. I experienced similar feelings when I applied for my MSc Business Analytics program. Here’s a guide to navigate the application process and how to maximize it.

Selecting Your Master’s Program

This is a significant choice, particularly at Imperial Business School, where you are only allowed to apply to one Master’s program each admissions cycle. Look beyond your previous academic background and concentrate on what you wish to delve into, as well as how the program resonates with your aspirations and objectives. I opted for Imperial due to its course layout and flexibility, which includes modules in logistics, supply chain analytics, leadership, and business problem resolution, aligning perfectly with my interests and future ambitions.

During my undergraduate studies, I aimed to become a business intelligence analyst but was not locked into a specific sector. My time at Imperial allowed me to investigate various industries and methodologies, ultimately steering me towards FMCG analytics. This investigation was as enriching as the technical knowledge I acquired.

Grasping Entry Requirements

The entry requirements can appear daunting, particularly considering Imperial’s stature. Assess your experiences against the course prerequisites. I discovered that I satisfied a majority of the requirements through my undergraduate degree. Master’s programs do not require mastery; they want to see how you will utilize your existing skills and knowledge. Comprehending the requirements makes them seem more attainable.

Most of my anxiety stemmed from misconceptions rather than actual criteria. Diligently examining the course description and correlating your experiences with the requirements can uncover that you are better prepared than you realize.

English Proficiency Criteria

International applicants should pay attention to the English language criteria, as you may need to undertake an evaluation like IELTS. I was exempt from additional tests since I completed my undergraduate studies in the UK. If necessary, Imperial provides Pre-sessional courses to assist with your academic English.

Crafting Your Personal Statement

“Your uniqueness, inquisitiveness, and enthusiasm for learning provide you with an advantage in your personal statement, so don’t get overly fixated on perfecting your responses!”

Numerous candidates attempt to present their experiences impeccably, but this can come off as unauthentic. Effectively utilize your experiences. I put significant effort into my personal statement, contemplating my career trajectory, reasons for selecting Imperial, and relating past experiences to future aspirations.

I detailed everything from my undergraduate program, including modules, projects, organizations, and volunteer work. I reflected on interests in data visualization, media, and AI, along with leadership roles. Rather than generic claims, I connected specific experiences to each prompt, elucidating their impact on my interests and objectives.

Being genuine and expressive is important, but refrain from being excessively descriptive. Polished or generic replies contribute little value. I documented my experiences, lessons learned, and missteps, then honed my draft progressively. Seeking feedback from someone you trust can yield valuable perspectives on your statement.

Your uniqueness, inquisitiveness, and eagerness to learn are your advantages, so don’t worry about achieving perfection!

Arranging References

Select referees wisely based on their familiarity with you and your work. I selected one based on authentic interests and another based on academic and career guidance. One was a professor in media and AI, while the other specialized in data visualization, reflecting my career trajectory. This combination illustrated both passion and scholarly strengths.

I communicated with my referees prior to listing them in my application, outlining my goals and details about the course. This made the process more seamless and personal.

Imperial generally sends referees a private link to submit their reference online, but email submissions are also an option. Verify the website for more information.
