Deciding to apply to Imperial is probably a choice you’ve been mulling over for a while, and the pressure of having just one opportunity can be intimidating. I experienced the same anxiety when I applied for my MSc Business Analytics program. Here’s a guide to effectively navigate the application journey.

Selecting Your Master’s Program

This choice is vital, particularly at Imperial Business School, where you can only apply for a single Master’s program each cycle. Reflect on what you wish to delve into beyond your previous education and how the program aligns with your aspirations and interests. During my BSc in Business Analytics, I built a foundation in analytical tools and entrepreneurship. I aimed to pursue this area further without repeating information or limiting my options too early. The structure of Imperial’s course, which includes modules in logistics, supply chain analytics, leadership, and business problem-solving, corresponded with my interests and future goals.

Throughout my undergraduate studies, my aim was to become a business intelligence analyst, but I wasn’t confined to any particular industry. I wanted to investigate different fields before settling into a full-time position. Attending Imperial enlightened me on my inclination towards FMCG analytics. This journey was just as significant as the technical skills I acquired.

Grasping Course Entry Expectations

Entry expectations can be daunting, especially given Imperial’s distinguished reputation. Evaluate your experiences against the course’s requirements. I discovered that I satisfied most of them through my undergraduate studies. Master’s programs don’t require you to be an authority; they’re interested in how you will apply and enhance your skills. Comprehending the requirements can make them seem more attainable.

A considerable amount of my anxiety stemmed from misconceptions rather than genuine requirements. Scrutinizing the course page closely often indicates you are more prepared than you realize.

English Language Proficiency

International applicants should take into account English language proficiency requirements. You may be required to take exams such as IELTS, depending on your previous study location. I was not required to take additional tests since I pursued my studies in the UK. If necessary, check Imperial’s website for a list of accepted assessments and credentials. Imperial also provides Pre-sessional courses to assist with academic English.

Formulating Your Personal Statement

“Your uniqueness, inquisitiveness, and eagerness to learn grant you an edge in your personal statement, so don’t fret about perfecting it!”

Many individuals attempt to present their experiences flawlessly, but this can come across as disingenuous. Utilize your experiences as your strength. I dedicated considerable time to my personal statement, contemplating my career trajectory, reasons for selecting Imperial, and how my previous experiences relate to my ambitions.

I documented my entire undergraduate journey, encompassing modules, projects, societies, and volunteering activities. I considered my work in data visualization, interests in media and AI, and leadership experience, connecting these directly to each query. Rather than broad claims like ‘I am passionate about data,’ I concentrated on specific projects and their impact on my interests and objectives.

Expressiveness and authenticity are crucial, but steer clear of overly elaborate responses. Generic or polished answers lack substance. I listed experiences, lessons, and errors, then refined my draft with fresh insights. Seeking feedback from someone you trust to review your statement can offer new perspectives.

Your uniqueness, curiosity, and eagerness to learn are your assets, so don’t concern yourself with achieving perfection in your responses!

Obtaining References

Select your referees wisely, as effective references depend on their familiarity with you and your work. I chose one referee based on authentic interests and the other based on academic and career pathways. One taught me about media and AI, while the other was my professor in data visualization. This blend emphasized both my passion and academic competencies.

I had discussions with both referees before listing them in my application, sharing my objectives and course specifics. This made the process more seamless and personalized.

Typically, Imperial provides referees with a private link for submitting references, although email submissions are also feasible.
