Deciding to apply to Imperial is likely a carefully thought-out choice rather than a random impulse, and it can be daunting knowing you have only one genuine opportunity. I experienced similar feelings when I submitted my application for the MSc Business Analytics program. Here’s an overview of the application process and tips on how to maximize it.

Selecting Your Master’s Program

This choice is pivotal, particularly at Imperial Business School, where you are restricted to applying for a single Master’s program each admissions cycle. Consider what you wish to investigate beyond your previous studies and how the program matches your aspirations and future objectives. During my last year of BSc Business Analytics, I had a solid foundation in analytical tools and entrepreneurship. I aimed to advance in this field without repeating topics or confining my options. The flexible module offerings of Imperial’s course caught my attention. It provided insights into areas such as logistics, supply chain analytics, and leadership, reflecting my passions.

Throughout my undergraduate studies, my goal was to become a business intelligence analyst, yet I wasn’t fixed on a specific industry. I wanted to gain exposure in various domains before settling into a full-time position. Attending Imperial allowed me to clarify my preferences, directing me towards FMCG analytics. Engaging with different sectors and work environments offered insights beyond just technical abilities.

Master’s Program Admission Prerequisites

Entry prerequisites can seem daunting due to Imperial’s impressive stature. Assess your experiences against the course prerequisites. I discovered that I satisfied most of them through my undergraduate education. Master’s programs do not expect mastery; they are interested in how you will apply and enhance your skills. Grasping course expectations helps make these requirements feel attainable.

Much of my anxiety stemmed from misconceptions rather than actual prerequisites. Thoroughly review the course information and align your experiences with what is required. You may be better equipped than you realize.

English Proficiency Standards

International candidates should be mindful of English language requirements, such as IELTS, based on their prior education. I was fortunate not to have to take additional tests as I studied in the UK. If necessary, visit Imperial’s website for the accepted tests and qualifications. Imperial also offers Pre-sessional courses for academic English preparation.

Crafting Your Postgraduate Personal Statement

“Your uniqueness, inquisitiveness, and eagerness to learn provide a competitive advantage in your personal statement, so don’t worry about achieving perfection!”

At this stage, many individuals strive to present their experiences flawlessly, but this can come off as insincere. Utilize your experiences to the fullest. I dedicated significant time to my personal statement, contemplating my career trajectory, reasons for selecting Imperial, and linking past experiences with future ambitions.

I cataloged everything from my undergraduate program, including modules, projects, clubs, and volunteer work. I reflected on my data visualization projects, interests in media and AI, and leadership roles, which shaped my view on analytics. I connected these experiences to each prompt, steering clear of generic comments. Rather than stating ‘I am passionate about data,’ I highlighted specific initiatives and their impact on my interests and aspirations.

Being expressive and genuine is important, but avoid excessive detailing. Generic or overly polished responses add little value, particularly when AI-generated answers lack personal touch. I noted my experiences, lessons, and setbacks, composed, and refined my statement. Consult someone trustworthy for feedback to gain new insights.

Your uniqueness, inquisitiveness, and eagerness to learn are your strong points, so don’t let the pursuit of perfection cause you undue stress!

Obtaining References for Your Application

Select referees carefully; their impact is determined by their familiarity with you and your work. I selected one referee based on genuine interests and another based on academic and career trajectory. One was a professor in media and AI, an area I am truly passionate about, and the other was my data visualization instructor, relevant to my career goals. This combination underscored my enthusiasm and academic capabilities.

I communicated with both referees prior to including them in my application, ensuring they understood my objectives and the program. This made the process more streamlined and personalized.

Imperial usually provides referees with a private link for reference submissions, but sometimes email submission may be an option. Verify referee guidelines and ensure they utilize professional email addresses and are aware of the deadlines.

Allocate extra time for referees to provide their responses; last-minute requests can lead to unnecessary stress.
