Pursuing admission to Imperial is probably a well-thought-out choice rather than a random act, and it may feel like a considerable burden knowing you have one genuine opportunity. I experienced similar feelings when I applied for my MSc Business Analytics program, so here’s a guide regarding the application process and how to optimize your experience.
Selecting Your Master’s Course
This is an essential choice, particularly at Imperial Business School, where you can only submit an application for one Master’s program per admissions cycle. Consider not just your past studies but also what you wish to investigate and how the program can assist you in clarifying your interests and path. I was attracted to Imperial due to the course structure and module adaptability, which provided exposure to emerging fields like logistics and supply chain analytics, aligning with my aspirations.
Throughout my undergraduate studies, I aimed to become a business intelligence analyst while wanting to explore different sectors before dedicating to a full-time position. Studying at Imperial allowed me to discern what best suited me, drawing me toward FMCG analytics. This exploration proved to be as important as the technical abilities acquired.
Master’s Course Entry Criteria
Entry criteria may seem daunting due to Imperial’s standing, but compare your background with the course requirements. I discovered that I fulfilled most criteria through my undergraduate education. Master’s programs do not expect you to be a specialist; you need to demonstrate how you will leverage your skills and knowledge to thrive. Grasping the criteria makes them seem more attainable.
English Language Standards
International candidates should be aware of English language standards, like the IELTS, based on where you obtained your degree. I didn’t need additional assessments since I studied in the UK. If necessary, Imperial provides Pre-sessional courses to enhance your academic English.
Crafting Your Personal Statement
“Your uniqueness, inquisitiveness, and eagerness to learn create a competitive edge in your personal statement, so don’t stress over perfecting it!”
Many attempt to portray experiences flawlessly, but this can sound disingenuous. Utilize your experiences to your benefit. I invested time in my personal statement, contemplating my career trajectory, motives for selecting Imperial, and how previous experiences tie into my ambitions.
Documenting everything I accomplished during my undergraduate studies, including modules, projects, and volunteering, was beneficial. I connected these experiences to each question, emphasizing specific projects and their impact on my interests and objectives. Authenticity is crucial, so steer clear of overly polished or generic replies. Request a trusted individual to review your statement for a fresh viewpoint.
Obtaining References
Select referees thoughtfully based on how well they are acquainted with you and your work. I chose one based on true interests and another based on academic focus. Discuss with your referees before listing them in your application to ensure they comprehend your aspirations and the course specifics.
Imperial typically provides referees with a secure link to upload their references. Verify the referee expectations and ensure they use a professional email account. Allow sufficient time for referee responses to mitigate stress.
Postgraduate Interviews
Interviews felt like a chance to showcase my thought process. Mine was conducted online using a recorded video format, allowing little room to pause or reconsider answers. Avoid excessive preparation that can make responses sound scripted. Practice articulating answers out loud to appear more natural and conversational.
Stay updated on course-related subjects for a broader comprehension. My interview concentrated on course concepts and learning areas. Approach your interview with clarity, self-assurance, and a genuine awareness of your motivations and objectives.
Application Phases and Timelines
Imperial conducts application phases throughout the year. I submitted my application in February during the second round while juggling my application with final examinations. Imperial’s application system allows you to save your progress and return later, simplifying the process. I received my offer around mid-May, so plan your schedule accordingly.
Underestimating the Application Journey
I underestimated the time required for document preparation and response times from Admissions during busy periods. I missed a scholarship deadline due to not reviewing dates, so prioritize this aspect. I submitted my application prior to my final results, resulting in follow-ups and increased pressure. Consider external timelines such as university documentation and referee submissions.
