Deciding to apply to Imperial is likely a thought-out choice rather than a spontaneous one, and it can be quite stressful knowing that you have only one true opportunity. I felt similarly when submitting my application for the MSc Business Analytics, so here is a guide to the application journey and tips on how to handle it.
Selecting Your Master’s Program
This is a vital choice, particularly at Imperial Business School, where you’re allowed to apply for only one Master’s program per admissions cycle. Think about what you wish to delve into beyond your prior studies and how the program corresponds with your interests and future aspirations. Throughout my BSc in Business Analytics, I established a strong base in analytical tools and entrepreneurship. I aimed to advance in this area without repeating material or confining myself. The structure of Imperial’s program, featuring modules in logistics, supply chain analytics, leadership, and solving business problems, attracted me.
During my undergraduate years, I aspired to be a business intelligence analyst without committing to a specific industry. Enrolling at Imperial enabled me to investigate various sectors and methodologies, ultimately steering me toward FMCG analytics. This investigation offered clarity and was equally as beneficial as the technical competencies acquired.
Master’s Program Admission Criteria
Admission criteria can seem daunting, particularly with Imperial’s esteemed status. Assess your background against the program prerequisites. I realized I fulfilled most criteria through my undergraduate experience. Master’s programs don’t require you to be an expert; they want to understand how you will apply and enhance your skills. Grasping the criteria can make them appear more attainable.
A good portion of my anxiety stemmed from assumptions rather than actual requirements. Diligently reviewing the program webpage and mapping your background can show you are more qualified than you initially perceived.
English Language Proficiency Requirements
International applicants must take into account English language proficiency standards. I did not require additional testing since I studied in the UK. If necessary, consult Imperial’s website for the accepted tests and qualifications. Imperial also provides Pre-sessional courses to aid in academic English preparation.
Crafting Your Postgraduate Personal Statement
“Your uniqueness, curiosity, and eagerness to learn provide you a competitive advantage in your personal statement, so don’t worry about achieving perfection!”
In this phase, many strive to portray their experiences flawlessly, but this can come off as insincere. Your experiences can be beneficial if articulated effectively. I dedicated ample time to my personal statement, contemplating my career path, motivations for selecting Imperial, and past engagements.
I enumerated everything from my undergraduate studies, encompassing modules, projects, societies, and volunteering endeavors. I pondered on data visualization, interests in media and AI, and leadership experiences, connecting them to each prompt. Rather than generic assertions, I prioritized specific projects and how they shaped my interests and ambitions.
Being genuine and expressive is important, yet refrain from excessively detailed responses. Neatly polished or generic replies contribute little substance. I recorded my experiences, insights, and errors, then honed my draft. Feedback from a reliable individual can offer fresh views and highlight areas for improvement.
Your uniqueness, curiosity, and eagerness to learn are your competitive advantages, so don’t obsess over making it flawless!
Obtaining References for Your Application
Select referees thoughtfully based on their familiarity with you and your work. I chose one based on sincere interests and another based on academic and career trajectory. One referee was my instructor in media and AI, while the other taught me data visualization. This combination showcased my enthusiasm and academic capabilities.
I communicated with both referees prior to including them in my application, clarifying my aspirations and course information, which facilitated the process. Typically, Imperial sends referees a confidential link for submission, but verify the requirements for referees and ensure they utilize a professional email and are aware of the timeline.
Allow for additional time for referees’ responses to mitigate last-minute pressure.
Postgraduate Interviews
My interviews felt more like a chance to showcase my thought process rather than an examination. The online recorded video format was different from what I anticipated, with limited opportunities to pause or reconsider responses.
Steer clear of over-preparation that might make your responses come off as rehearsed. Be familiar with your experiences and articulate them straightforwardly for a genuine interview. Although practice questions assist in understanding the format, real questions may vary. Relying on pre-prepared answers can induce pressure if the questions diverge.
Rehearse by vocalizing answers in front of a mirror or
