If you’re thinking about applying to Imperial, it’s probably a decision you’ve been getting ready for. The stress of having one genuine opportunity to apply can be considerable. I experienced the same feelings when I applied for my MSc Business Analytics program, so here’s a guide on the application process and tips for maneuvering through it.

Selecting Your Master’s Program

This is a vital choice, particularly since you can only submit an application for one Master’s program at Imperial Business School during each admissions cycle.

Look beyond your past academic work and concentrate on what you wish to explore and how the program can aid in understanding your interests and path. When I applied, I was completing my final year of a BSc Business Analytics program, which gave me a solid groundwork in analytical tools and entrepreneurship. I aimed to advance in this area without duplicating content or restricting myself prematurely. The course structure at Imperial, with its adaptable module choices, appealed to me. The modules provided exposure to new fields such as logistics, supply chain analytics, leadership in analytics, and business problem-solving, which resonated with my interests and aspirations.

Throughout my undergraduate experience, I aspired to be a business intelligence analyst but wasn’t fixed on any particular industry. I desired to explore diverse sectors before taking on a full-time position. Studying at Imperial and interacting with various modules and methodologies enabled me to determine what suited me best. Gradually, I became more inclined towards fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) analytics. This exploratory journey offered clarity and was as significant as the technical skills I acquired.

Master’s Program Admission Criteria

Admission criteria can seem daunting, especially given Imperial’s esteemed reputation. Compare your background with the course prerequisites. I discovered I fulfilled many requirements through my undergraduate studies. Master’s programs don’t expect mastery in all areas; you must demonstrate how you plan to leverage your skills and knowledge for success. Grasping the course prerequisites helps them appear more attainable.

Much of my anxiety stemmed from assumptions rather than actual expectations. Carefully reviewing the course information and aligning your experiences with the criteria can show you that you’re better prepared than you realized.

English Language Proficiencies

International applicants should take English language requirements into account. Depending on the location of your degree, you might be required to take a test like IELTS. I didn’t have to take extra tests since I studied in the UK. If you need to fulfill English proficiency requirements, verify the acceptable tests and qualifications listed on Imperial’s site. Imperial also provides Pre-sessional courses to enhance your academic English skills.

Crafting Your Postgraduate Personal Statement

“Your uniqueness, curiosity, and eagerness to learn are what provide you with an advantage in your personal statement, so don’t overly fixate on making your responses perfect!”

Many attempt to showcase their experiences flawlessly, which can lead to answers that feel overly refined. Utilize your experiences effectively.

I dedicated significant time to my personal statement, contemplating my career path, motivations for selecting Imperial, and how previous experiences tie into my goals.

Compiling a list of everything I had achieved during my undergraduate studies aided me. I reflected on aspects like data visualization, interests in media and AI, and leadership experiences, which shaped my analytics viewpoint. I directly linked these experiences to each question, steering clear of vague statements. Instead of stating ‘I am passionate about data,’ I emphasized specific projects and experiences and detailed how they shaped my interests and objectives.

Being genuine and expressive is crucial, but avoid excessively elaborate responses. Fine-tuned or generic answers provide minimal benefit. I documented my experiences, insights, and missteps, developed a draft, and polished it with fresh ideas. My responses came together organically. Seek feedback from someone you trust to
