Deciding to apply to Imperial is probably a choice you’ve mulled over for quite a while, and the weight of having just a single opportunity can be intimidating. I experienced similar feelings when I submitted my application for the MSc Business Analytics program. Here’s a roadmap to the application journey and how to maneuver through it efficiently.

Selecting Your Master’s Program

This is a pivotal decision, particularly at Imperial Business School, where only one Master’s program can be applied for each admissions cycle. Think about what you aim to pursue beyond your past academic experiences and how the program corresponds with your interests and ambitions. I opted for Imperial due to its adaptable curriculum, featuring modules in logistics, supply chain analytics, leadership in analytics, and business problem-solving, which aligned with my interests and future objectives.

Throughout my bachelor’s studies, I aspired to be a business intelligence analyst but wished to investigate various industries before dedicating myself to a full-time position. Studying at Imperial aided me in identifying my preference for FMCG analytics, offering insight and essential skills.

Master’s Program Admission Requirements

Admission criteria can seem daunting, but assessing your background against the program’s requirements can be beneficial. I realized I satisfied most of the criteria through my undergraduate studies. Programs don’t expect mastery; they want to understand how you will apply and enhance your skills. Grasping the requirements makes them seem more attainable.

A lot of my anxiety stemmed from misconceptions instead of actual criteria. Diligently reviewing the course information may show that you are better prepared than you assume.

English Proficiency Criteria

International applicants should take English proficiency standards into account. I didn’t need further tests as I studied in the UK, but if necessary, refer to Imperial’s website for accepted exams and qualifications. Imperial also provides Pre-sessional courses for preparation in academic English.

Crafting Your Postgraduate Personal Statement

“Your uniqueness, inquisitiveness, and eagerness to learn provide a competitive edge in your personal statement, so don’t get too fixated on perfection!”

Many individuals attempt to showcase flawless experiences, but authentic accounts are more compelling. I invested significant time in my personal statement, contemplating my career path, inspirations, and previous experiences. Documenting everything from my undergraduate experience helped me tie my experiences to each question, steering clear of vague remarks.

Being expressive and genuine is essential, but refrain from excessively detailed responses. I polished my draft over time and sought input from a trusted individual. Your uniqueness and eagerness to learn are crucial, so don’t worry about achieving perfection.

Obtaining References

Select referees who are familiar with you and your work. I chose one based on mutual interests and another based on academic focus. Communicating with referees before including them in your application ensures that they understand your objectives and can provide relevant references. Verify referee requirements and ensure they use professional email addresses.

Allow ample time for referees to respond, as last-minute requests can induce stress.

Postgraduate Interviews

Interviews present an opportunity to demonstrate your thinking process. Mine was conducted online with prerecorded questions, necessitating immediate responses. Avoid excessive preparation, as memorized replies can appear disingenuous. Practice articulating answers aloud to render them natural and conversational.

Stay updated on course-related subjects to discuss them confidently. My interview centered on course topics and lasted approximately 15-20 minutes. Approach it with clarity, confidence, and an understanding of your motivations.

Application Phases and Timelines

Imperial offers application phases throughout the year. I applied in February during the second round, juggling my application with final examinations. Imperial’s application system allows you to save your progress, facilitating management. My application process took around three months from submission to decision.

What I Underestimated

I underestimated the duration for document processing and responses from the Admissions team. I missed a scholarship deadline due to not checking dates early, so prioritize this. Submitting my application prior to final results created added pressure, underscoring the importance of considering external timelines.

International students should account for post-offer steps like CAS, visa applications, and travel arrangements, as these necessitate time and coordination.

Concluding Thoughts

The process was manageable with sufficient time and planning. Reflecting on my aspirations proved beneficial. If given the chance to redo it, I would organize my plans in accordance with deadlines and
