Choosing to apply to Imperial is likely an intentional choice, rather than a hasty one. The weight of having a single opportunity can be quite intimidating. I experienced similar feelings when I applied for my MSc Business Analytics, so here’s a guide to successfully managing the application journey.

Choosing Your Master’s Program

This choice is essential, particularly at Imperial Business School, as you can only apply to one Master’s program each cycle. Think about what you wish to learn beyond your prior studies and how the program corresponds with your interests and aspirations. Throughout my BSc in Business Analytics, I established a foundation in analytical instruments and entrepreneurship. I aimed to progress in this area without duplicating content or limiting my trajectory too early. The course design at Imperial, featuring adaptable module selections, drew me in. It provided insight into new fields such as logistics, supply chain analytics, and leadership, aligning with my interests and future goals.

At first, I targeted becoming a business intelligence analyst without tying myself to a particular sector. Studying at Imperial enabled me to investigate different fields and methodologies, leading me to discover my preference for FMCG analytics. This exploration clarified my path beyond mere technical abilities.

Grasping Course Entry Criteria

Entry criteria can appear daunting, especially given Imperial’s esteemed status. Take a moment to evaluate your experiences against the demands of the course. I realized that I fulfilled most requirements through my undergraduate work. Master’s courses don’t anticipate mastery in everything; they aim to see how you will apply and enhance your skills. Knowing the criteria helps make them feel more achievable and less overwhelming.

Much of my anxiety arose from preconceptions rather than actual requirements. Carefully examine the course page and align your experiences with the criteria. You may be better prepared than you realize.

English Proficiency Expectations

International applicants should be mindful of the English proficiency expectations. You might need to take tests like IELTS, depending on your educational background. I was exempt from additional assessments because I studied in the UK. If needed, refer to Imperial’s website for the accepted tests and qualifications. Additionally, Imperial provides Pre-sessional courses to aid your academic English skills.

Developing Your Personal Statement

“Your uniqueness, curiosity, and eagerness to learn offer you an advantage in your personal statement, so refrain from stressing over achieving perfection!”

Many individuals attempt to perfect their experiences, yet this can come off as disingenuous. Make effective use of your experiences. I dedicated ample time to my personal statement, contemplating my career trajectory, reasons for choosing Imperial, and linking past experiences to future ambitions.

I enumerated everything from my undergraduate studies, including modules, projects, clubs, and volunteer work. I reflected on interests in data visualization, media, and AI, alongside leadership experiences that shaped my analytics viewpoint. I connected these directly to the questions posed, steering clear of vague statements. Instead of declaring ‘I am passionate about data,’ I highlighted specific projects and their impact on my interests and ambitions.

Being expressive and genuine is important, but steer clear of excessive detail. Generic or overly polished responses contribute little value. I documented my experiences, learnings, and setbacks, then refined my draft with fresh perspectives. Over time, my responses felt more authentic. Have someone you trust review your statement for additional insights.

Your uniqueness, curiosity, and eagerness to learn are your assets, so don’t fixate on perfection!

Obtaining References

Choose your referees thoughtfully based on how well they know you and your work. I picked one based on genuine interests and the other based on academic and career direction. One referee instructed me in media and AI, an area I personally valued, while the other was my professor in data visualization, aligning with my career objectives. This blend highlighted both my enthusiasm and academic strengths. Your choice of referees might differ based on your individual experiences and priorities.

I reached out to both referees before listing them in my application to ensure they were aware of my goals and the specifics of the course. This made the process smoother and more insightful.

Imperial usually provides referees with a private link for submitting their references, although email submission is an option. Check the <a href="
