Deciding to apply to Imperial is likely something you’ve been pondering for some time, and with only one opportunity to submit your application, it can feel overwhelming. I experienced the same when applying for my MSc Business Analytics program. Here’s a guide to the application journey and tips on how to handle it successfully.

Selecting Your Master’s Program

This is a significant choice, particularly at Imperial Business School, where applicants are limited to one Master’s program per admissions cycle. Reflect on what you wish to investigate and how the program aligns with your interests and ambitions. I opted for Imperial due to its adaptable course framework, featuring modules in logistics, supply chain analytics, leadership, and business problem-solving, which resonated with my interests and future goals.

During my undergraduate years, I aimed to become a business intelligence analyst but wanted to explore different sectors. My time at Imperial allowed me to discover my passion for FMCG analytics, providing clarity and essential skills.

Master’s Program Entry Criteria

The entry criteria can seem daunting, but evaluating your background against the program requirements can be beneficial. I found that my undergraduate education fulfilled most of the prerequisites. Master’s programs are not seeking experts; they wish to see how you will apply and grow your skills. Familiarity with the requirements makes them more attainable.

Much of my anxiety stemmed from misconceptions rather than actual criteria. A thorough examination of the course page can reveal that you are better prepared than you might think.

English Proficiency Criteria

International applicants should take into account the English language criteria, such as IELTS, based on their previous education. I didn’t need to take additional tests as I completed my undergraduate studies in the UK. Consult Imperial’s website for a list of accepted tests and credentials. Additionally, Imperial offers Pre-sessional courses for enhancing academic English skills.

Crafting Your Postgraduate Personal Statement

“Your uniqueness, inquisitiveness, and eagerness to learn provide you a competitive advantage in your personal statement, so don’t stress about achieving perfection!”

Many individuals attempt to showcase their experiences flawlessly, but genuineness is essential. I dedicated a considerable amount of time to my personal statement, contemplating my career path, motivations, and previous experiences. Compiling elements from my undergraduate degree, including projects and extracurricular activities, allowed me to connect them to each question. Specific examples, rather than vague statements, enhanced its value.

Being expressive and sincere is crucial, but steer clear of excessively elaborate responses. Drafting and polishing my statement over time enabled my answers to flow more naturally. Having someone review your statement can yield helpful insights.

Your uniqueness and desire to learn are your advantages, so prioritize authenticity over perfection.

Acquiring References

Select referees who are familiar with you and your work. I chose one based on genuine interests and another based on academic focus. Discussing with referees prior to including them in your application ensures they grasp your objectives and are prepared to furnish informed references. Review referee requirements and confirm they utilize professional email addresses.

Allow sufficient time for referees to reply, as last-minute requests can induce stress.

Postgraduate Interviews

Interviews serve as a platform to convey your thought processes. Mine was a recorded video format with limited opportunities to respond to questions. Avoid excessive preparation, as it may lead to answers sounding pre-scripted. Knowing your experiences well and articulating them clearly feels more authentic. Practice vocalizing your responses to make them fluid and conversational.

Stay updated on course-related subjects to speak with confidence. My interview emphasized thematic elements rather than my written application. Approach interviews with lucidity, confidence, and a firm understanding of your motivations and aspirations.

Application Phases and Timelines

Imperial’s departments offer application phases throughout the year. I submitted my application in February during the second round while managing my final exams. Imperial’s adaptable application process allowed me to save my progress and complete sections over time. The whole process took approximately three months from submission to decision.

What I Underestimated

I underestimated the duration required for document processing and the Admissions team’s reactions. I missed a scholarship deadline by not reviewing dates in advance. Submitting my application before receiving final results added pressure, underscoring the necessity of accounting for external timelines.

International students should contemplate additional actions after receiving an offer, such as obtaining a CAS, applying for a visa, and organizing travel to London.
