Once you arrive, the immense size, vibrancy, and variety of London might feel overwhelming. However, within a fortnight, you’ll probably find yourself enchanted by its charm. The city’s transport links are exceptional: the Tube, buses, and trains can whisk you around London and further afield. With an array of cultures, flavors, and experiences, London has something to help everyone feel welcomed.
Housing: handling your major expense smartly
Your accommodation will likely be your largest monthly outlay. Ideal student housing can be expensive and gets booked up rapidly, so securing early reservations is essential to clinch the best price.
To cut costs, explore private rentals. Websites such as SpareRoom, AmberStudent, and University Living are popular choices. Sharing a flat with friends can lower expenses and offer companionship. Always consider safety, comfort, and convenient access to public transportation. One of London’s best-kept secrets? Numerous student discounts are available. Almost every chain and many local shops provide them. For example, Honest Burgers in South Kensington gives a substantial 20% discount to students, making it ideal for lunch breaks on campus.
Before you travel to London, download student discount apps such as UNiDAYS and Student Beans. These resources offer discounts on apparel, electronics, dining, and subscriptions like Spotify and Amazon Prime. Always have your student ID handy – you’ll be amazed at the savings you can uncover just by making inquiries!
How to secure lower Tube fares with a railcard
As a student, you can acquire a 16–25 Railcard for reduced national rail fares and a student Oyster card for commuting in the city. Request assistance from staff at any Tube station to connect your railcard to your Oyster card for a 30% discount on off-peak Tube fares! Personally, I save about £50 each month on traveling with this advice, a tip I wish I had discovered earlier.
Bicycling is also becoming more popular, with many Imperial students opting for second-hand bicycles and utilizing London’s growing cycling infrastructure to further cut down commuting expenses.
