Ten months prior, back in October 2022, I found myself anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my Materials Science and Engineering degree as a newcomer. Diving into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted self was prepared for. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyable moments! So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?
One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most nerve-wracking parts of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be your greatest concern. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a couple of days ahead of classes starting, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Today, I proudly state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with simple conversations with others in the same boat. So, what did I discover? It’s advantageous to take a leap at the year’s start. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also recognized that authenticity is essential. With a plethora of diverse individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was undoubtedly a significant advancement from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. What assisted me was recalling that everyone is facing similar challenges. If something is confusing to you, I can nearly assure you that others are in the same position. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This could very well be the most crucial lesson of the first year. Seek support from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the difficulties students encounter. They understand our concerns and keep open lines of communication regarding our challenges throughout the year. I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support until the year was ending, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I talked about taking leaps before – I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with the staff, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has illustrated that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often unwarranted and can be eased by the abundant support options offered by staff and fellow students. I’ve realized that I’m never alone, and I’ve learned how to find joy amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
