Ten months ago, in October 2022, I experienced feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Diving straight in was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was familiar with. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal growth, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what has this year taught me, and where do I stand now?
One of the initial and most nerve-wracking obstacles was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more intimidating elements of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it might be among your largest concerns. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day retreating to my room because I felt too overwhelmed to go out and meet others. Now, as I sit here, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve built a second family at Imperial, and all it took was some casual conversation with individuals in similar positions. So, what did I take away from this? I discovered it’s advantageous to take a leap at the year’s beginning. If you’re not feeling ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and events to facilitate your connection with others. I also realized that if you can embody one trait, it should be authenticity. With a diverse array of individuals across the course and university, you’re bound to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the workload and complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger transition from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment isn’t always conducive to your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar feelings. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can nearly assure you there are others who aren’t grasping it either. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to absorb during the first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They are invested in your success and recognize that students face challenges. They show empathy toward students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our difficulties. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until year-end, but I wish I had embraced it earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I made one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to familiarize myself with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and it’s undeniably one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary insight from this aspect of university is to capitalize on the support being offered. You can never receive too much!
Generally speaking, this year has enlightened me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are typically irrational and can be eased by the vast support systems available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
