Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I experienced anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead as I was set to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not a realm my introverted and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment! What insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently a significant worry for newcomers at university. On the first day of moving into my accommodation, I remained in my room all day, daunted by the prospect of encountering new individuals. Now, I can assertively say I have forged some of the most wonderful friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial through engaging in casual conversations with fellow students in comparable situations. I realized it’s vital to take that initial plunge at the start of the academic year. If you’re feeling unprepared, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker activities can assist you in connecting with others. Stay true to yourself; amidst such a diverse crowd, you’ll find those who resonate with you.

An additional obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels was substantial, and the shift from the first to the second term proved even more demanding. This atmosphere can undermine your confidence, particularly when you find yourself comparing with others. Keep in mind, everyone shares similar experiences. If you find something challenging, it’s likely that others do as well. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This is essential during your first year. Reach out for support from your peers and faculty!

The faculty in Materials are phenomenal. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the difficulties faced by students. They keep open lines of communication with us regarding our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I took a significant step by serving as a year well-being representative, which enabled me to connect with staff, a valuable experience. There are numerous opportunities to get to know the staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for your personal growth. Make the most of the support available; you can never have too much!

This year has taught me that feelings of nervousness about university are often baseless and can be mitigated through the support offered by staff and fellow students. I’ve realized I’m never alone and that I can find joy even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
