Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and quiet self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and ample enjoyment! But what have I gained from this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of starting university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may be among your primary concerns. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to step out and introduce myself to anyone. However, as I sit here today, I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what have I gleaned? I’ve learned that it’s always advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be countless ice-breaker opportunities and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I’ve also realized that if you can embody one quality, let it be authenticity. With such a diverse crowd throughout the course and the university, you are sure to find like-minded individuals.

An additional obstacle was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was surely a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can challenge your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that feeling, one being the awareness that everyone faces similar challenges. If you find something perplexing, I can nearly assure you that there are others who do as well. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to absorb in the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely desire to see you succeed and comprehend the challenges that students encounter. They relate to students and ensure consistent communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I spoke of taking chances earlier – I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to familiarize myself with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to fully utilize the assistance available. You can never have too much support!

In general, this year has imparted to me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often misplaced and can be mitigated with the multitude of support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never truly alone, and it has taught me how to enjoy life despite the pressures from exams and deadlines.
