Ten months back, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead as I geared up to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself into the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and joy! What insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was establishing friendships. This often ranks as one of the most frightening elements of entering university, and for potential students, it can be a significant worry. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, I remained in my room all day, too daunted to step out and engage with others. Now, I can assertively say I have formed some of the closest friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with those in comparable situations. What have I understood? It’s advantageous to take a plunge at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaking events can assist you in bonding with others. Also, be authentic. With such a wide array of individuals, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the academic load and the complexity of the material. There was a clear transition from A-levels, and an even more significant jump from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can shake your self-esteem; you might feel less capable compared to your peers. Keep in mind, everyone shares the same experience. If something is unclear to you, chances are it’s unclear to others as well. So, seek assistance. This could be the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year. Request help from classmates and faculty!
Speaking of faculty, they are wonderful. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They keep lines of communication open throughout the year regarding any concerns. I didn’t make use of pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with staff, which is priceless. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s one of the finest decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to leverage the support available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has shown me that apprehensive feelings about university are frequently baseless and can be mitigated with the assistance of staff and peers. I’ve realized I’m never truly alone and have learned how to find enjoyment despite the pressures from exams and deadlines.
