By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead as I began my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and enjoyment. What have I discovered, and what is my current state?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This often becomes a significant worry for newcomers at university. On my inaugural day settling into residence, I remained in my room all day, too daunted to step out and interact with others. Now, I can proudly declare that I’ve built some of the most meaningful friendships here at university. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all stemming from initiating brief conversations with others facing similar circumstances. The takeaway? Take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared, that’s perfectly fine! Numerous ice-breaker activities are available to assist you in connecting with others. Be authentic, and you’ll attract people who resonate with you.
Another hurdle was managing the workload and the difficulty of the material. The transition from A-levels was quite dramatic, and the leap from the first to the second term was even greater. This atmosphere can shake your confidence; you may feel less capable compared to your peers. Remember, everyone is navigating the same situation. If something isn’t clear to you, it likely isn’t for others as well. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance—this is essential in your first year. Reach out to fellow students and faculty!
The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the difficulties students encounter. They keep in touch with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to connect with staff—a valuable opportunity. There are various ways to get acquainted with the faculty, and it’s one of the greatest things you can do for yourself. Make the most of the support provided; you can never have too much!
This year has demonstrated to me that feelings of anxiety regarding university are often misplaced and can be eased with help from staff and fellow students. I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone and how to find enjoyment even amid the pressures of exams and deadlines.
