Ten months earlier, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. As a first-year student, I was about to embark on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering. Venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously introverted and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I perceive a year abundant in personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and what is my current position?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you are a prospective student reading this, it might be among your greatest worries. On my initial day settling into accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too fearful to venture out and introduce myself to others. Yet, as I sit here today, I can assertively state that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in small talk with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I realize? I discovered that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the year’s beginning. If you aren’t quite prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample opportunities for ice-breakers and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, be yourself. With a myriad of different individuals throughout the course and university, you are bound to encounter like-minded people.
Another challenge was the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a shift from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can test your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors aided me in overcoming that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If you don’t grasp something, I can virtually assure you that others also don’t understand it. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for help. This might be the single most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Seek assistance from both your peers and the staff!
This brings me to my subsequent point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks previously – I took one at the year’s commencement by becoming a year well-being representative. This role facilitated my acquaintance with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and it is undoubtedly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to seize the support available. You can never seek too much!
In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated through the diverse support options accessible from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
