Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Reflecting on this past year, I recognize a period filled with personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights did I gain, and what is my current status?

One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be your chief concern. On my initial day moving into my lodging, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the entire day cloistered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. Today, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had during my time at this university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with peers navigating similar experiences. So, what is my takeaway? It’s always beneficial to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events will allow you to connect with fellow students. I also realized that if you can embody anything, be authentic. With such a diverse range of individuals in the program and the university, you’re sure to encounter those who share your mindset.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a noticeable leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger shift from the first term to the second. Existing in such an atmosphere can be tough on your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. Several factors aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same predicament. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can practically assure you that others are equally confused. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial skill to cultivate in your freshman year. Reach out for support from your classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The instructors in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the challenges faced by students. They show compassion towards students and keep open lines of communication regarding our concerns throughout the academic year. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had engaged with it sooner. I referred to taking risks earlier – I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to build rapport with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the most advantageous steps you can take for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to leverage the support available. You can never receive too much help!

In conclusion, this year has illustrated that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated through the support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never on my own and how to enjoy my experience despite pressures such as examinations and deadlines.
