Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. As a first-year student, I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering. Venturing into the unknown wasn’t something I was familiar with, given my previously shy and introverted nature. Looking back now, I recognize a year marked by personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a significant worry for you. On the first day of moving into my residence, just days ahead of classes starting, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and socialize. However, today I can assertively state that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what lesson did I take away? I realized that it’s best to make bold moves at the start of the year. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaking activities to facilitate connections with others. I also found that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who connect with you.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in many respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being in such a competitive atmosphere can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me manage these feelings, one being the reminder that we’re all experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling with a concept, I can nearly promise that others are too. So, reach out for assistance. This may be the one most crucial lesson to grasp during your first year. Seek help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and are aware of the difficulties students encounter. They show understanding and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year concerning our issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had started earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking bold steps – I made one at the start of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to engage with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for your own growth! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to utilize the support available. You can never have too much assistance!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unfounded and can be mitigated through the various support resources provided by staff and peers. It has taught me that I’m never on my own and how to find enjoyment even amidst challenges like exams and deadlines.
