Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Back in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Stepping into the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I realize that the year has been one of personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?

One of the foremost and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This often stands out as one of the most frightening elements of beginning university, and if you are an incoming student, it may pose a significant worry for you. On my first day moving into my housing, just days before the start of classes, I remained in my room the whole day, too scared to venture out and meet anyone. Presently, I can proudly declare that I’ve made some remarkable friends here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what is my takeaway? It’s crucial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not feeling prepared, don’t fret! There are numerous ice-breaking activities designed to help you connect with others. Also, just be yourself. With a diverse group of individuals at the university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels was certainly significant, with an even larger transition from the first semester to the second. Being in such a setting can challenge your self-esteem; watching others study may create feelings of inadequacy. What helped me was the realization that everyone experiences similar struggles. If something is unclear to you, it’s likely that others feel the same way. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most essential lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from fellow students and faculty!

Speaking of faculty, those in Materials are truly exceptional. They are invested in your success and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and keep open lines of communication with us regarding our issues. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had availed myself of it sooner. I spoke of taking chances – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to establish connections with the faculty, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My key takeaway is to leverage the resources available to you. You can never have too much support!

All in all, this year has revealed to me that feelings of nervousness about university are frequently misplaced and can be mitigated by the support accessible from both staff and fellow students. I’ve come to understand that I’m never solitary and how to find joy even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
