Back in October 2022, I felt anxious, scared, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Such a leap was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of fun! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is surely one of the more daunting components of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it might be a major concern for you. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the term starting, I spent the entirety of the day cooped up in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to anyone. However, as I sit here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with engaging in light conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I glean? I learned that it’s always a good idea to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be countless ice-breaking interactions and events to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. With a diverse array of people throughout the course and university, you’re certain to encounter like-minded individuals.

An additional challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was definitely a leap from A-level studies, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere isn’t always straightforward for one’s confidence; you may witness others studying and feel inadequate. A few things aided me through that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar waters. If something is unclear, I can almost assure you that there are others who are equally perplexed. Thus, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand that students face difficulties. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps before – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary insight from this aspect of university life is to take full advantage of the assistance being offered. You can never have too much!

Overall, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both preceding and during university, are nearly always baseless and can be alleviated by the multitude of support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never truly alone, and it has taught me how to have fun while managing stressors like exams and deadlines.
