Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my Materials Science and Engineering degree as a freshman. Engaging with the unknown was not something my prior shy and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most intimidating elements of beginning university, and if you are an incoming student, it could be your primary concern. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve connected with some of the finest friends I’ve ever had at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what have I realized? I’ve learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events designed to assist you in mingling with others. I’ve also discovered that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals in the course and at the university, you’re sure to find peers who resonate with you.

An additional challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in many ways, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel unworthy. Several factors helped me navigate this sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If something is unclear to you, I can almost assure you that others are also struggling. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Request aid from your classmates and the faculty!

That leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials is fantastic. They genuinely desire for you to succeed and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize with students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had tapped into it earlier. I mentioned taking chances before – I made one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to familiarize myself with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with the staff, and it’s unquestionably one of the finest things you can do for your own benefit! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have an excess of support!

All in all, this year has shown me that feelings of apprehension, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated with the wide array of support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I am never truly alone and how to find enjoyment in the midst of pressures like exams and deadlines.
