Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with nerves, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Diving into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was accustomed to. Looking back now, I see a year rich with personal growth, obstacles, and immense enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current standing?
One of the initial and most anxiety-inducing challenges was forming friendships. This is undeniably one of the more intimidating elements of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it might rank among your top concerns. On my first day moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term’s commencement, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, daunted by the thought of venturing out and meeting new people. Nevertheless, sitting here today, I can confidently affirm that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and on this course. I’ve built a second family at Imperial, and it all originated with some light conversation with peers in similar predicaments. So, what did I discover? I realized that it’s always wise to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker occasions and events designed to help you connect with others. I’ve also found that if you can embody one thing, it should be your true self. With such a diverse array of people across the course and university, you’re certain to discover individuals who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even more substantial leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment doesn’t always bolster your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate in comparison. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that sentiment, one of which was the reminder that everyone shares similar struggles. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can nearly guarantee that there are a number of others who are equally confused. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for support from your classmates and the teaching staff!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and acknowledge that students encounter difficulties. They show compassion towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t truly make use of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned taking chances previously – I embraced one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which is tremendously beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with instructors, and it’s unquestionably one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this facet of university life is to capitalize on the assistance available to you. There’s no such thing as too much help!
Overall, this year has revealed to me that anxious feelings, both before and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be mitigated through the wide range of support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never truly alone, and it has demonstrated how to find joy amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
