Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Stepping into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. In hindsight, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
A significant and initially overwhelming challenge was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you are a prospective student, it may loom as one of your greatest worries. On my first day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the classes beginning, I remained in my room all day, too fearful to step out and introduce myself to anyone. However, today, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had while at university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a chance at the outset of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be plenty of ice-breaker opportunities and activities to aid you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can embody one quality, let it be authenticity. With such a diverse group of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.
Another hurdle was the workload and complexity of the content. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can challenge your self-assurance; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the understanding that everyone shares the same experience. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you there are others who also do not grasp it. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson to learn in your first year. Request help from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show empathy towards us and maintain consistent communication throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had engaged with it sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking bold steps – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to get acquainted with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most constructive things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson from this facet of university life is to take full advantage of the assistance available. You can never have an excess of that!
In summary, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently misplaced and can be mitigated through the various support resources accessible from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
