Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Diving into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year of personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what have I discovered, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting parts of commencing university, and if you are an incoming student, it could be your largest concern. On the day I moved into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term starting, I spent the whole day in my room, too frightened to venture out and introduce myself. Now, I can assertively state that I’ve built some of the best friendships here, both at the university and within my course. I’ve created a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in comparable situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s best to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not ready or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be plenty of social events to facilitate connections with others. I also realized that being authentic is essential. With so many diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re bound to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was a noticeable leap from A-levels, and an even larger jump from the first semester to the second. Being in such a setting can test your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What assisted me was the reminder that everyone is undergoing similar experiences. If you don’t grasp something, it’s likely that others don’t either. So, seek assistance. This might be the most vital skill to acquire in the first year. Reach out to peers and faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand the challenges that students endure. They are empathetic and maintain open communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the student support services until the conclusion of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking chances previously – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous ways to build relationships with staff, and it’s among the best choices you can make for yourself! My main takeaway is to take full advantage of the support provided. You can never have too much!

All in all, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be eased with the support available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and taught me how to find joy despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
