Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year abundant with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this year brought, and where do I find myself now?
One of the first and most formidable hurdles was forming friendships. This facet of commencing university can be daunting, and if you are a future student, it could be one of your greatest worries. On my initial day moving into my accommodation, only days before the semester kicked off, I spent the whole day inside my room, too intimidated to step outside and introduce myself. Now, I can assertively state that I’ve built some of the strongest friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I found that taking the initiative at the year’s outset is crucial. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breaking and events to assist you in mingling with others. I also realized that being authentic is essential. With such a variety of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to encounter people like yourself.
Another obstacle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable advancement from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. Several factors aided me in overcoming this sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you find something perplexing, I can almost assure you that there are others who feel the same way. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn during the first year. Reach out for support from your peers and the staff!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and are aware of the difficulties students encounter. They are empathetic and maintain ongoing dialogue with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps earlier – at the year’s commencement, I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this part of university is to capitalize on the assistance provided. You can never have an excess!
All in all, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often unjustified and can be eased by the various support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and has helped me to find enjoyment even amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
