By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my formerly timid and reserved nature was familiar with. Now, looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This frequently emerges as one of the most frightening elements of commencing university, and if you’re perusing this as a potential student, it may be your primary worry. On the first day of my move into my accommodation, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Today, though, I can assertively say I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced, both at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which started with casual conversations with individuals in similar predicaments. So, what have I discovered? I realized that it’s beneficial to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker activities will be at your disposal to facilitate connections with others. I also found that if there’s one thing to be, it’s yourself. With such a wide variety of individuals throughout the course and the university, you are bound to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even steeper leap from the first term to the second. Being in such an atmosphere can test your confidence; you may observe your peers studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone shares the same experience. If something is confusing, I can nearly guarantee others are perplexed as well. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They sympathize with us and maintain ongoing dialogues throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I did make one at the outset of the year by becoming a Well-Being Representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s among the best moves you can make for yourself! My main takeaway from this aspect of university is to utilize the support available. You can never have too much!

In conclusion, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often groundless and can be eased with the support systems provided by faculty and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment amid challenges like exams and deadlines.
