Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current stance?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re perusing this as a future student, it might be one of your primary worries. On my initial day of settling into my accommodation, a few days ahead of classes, I spent the whole day cooped up in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. Yet, sitting here today, I can assertively say I’ve established some of the most incredible friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve created a second family at Imperial, all of it initiated with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I found that taking a chance at the start of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be countless ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded people.

Another obstacle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a shift from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may notice others studying and feel inferior. Several factors assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can almost assure you that others are in the same predicament. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to acquire in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask your peers and the faculty for help!

This transitions me to my next observation. The staff in Materials are wonderful. They genuinely want you to excel and are aware that students face difficulties. They show compassion towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned previously about taking chances – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s certainly one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary insight from this aspect of university is to utilize the assistance offered to you. You can never have too much help!

Overall, this year has imparted the lesson that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated by the various support avenues provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and revealed how to find joy amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
